At Rye Park Nursery School we are deeply committed to ensuring that our children develop the communication and language skills required to become confident readers.
We believe that children's language and imaginative skills are greatly developed through their knowledge of nursery rhymes, poems, high quality reading books. Introducing your children to stories early on fosters a love of books and storytelling, enabling them to associate positive emotions which motivates them to be curious and enjoy reading and sharing books.
We have a wide range of books available in all areas of the school for the children to enjoy, these are classified into story and information books. Children may borrow any of these books to share at home. All children have a reading record for both staff and parents to contribute to.
To further support children in their development of reading we use a range of core books. We have chosen books that are repetitive, predictable and often feature rhyme. This makes it easier for children to join in with so that the experience of reading becomes interactive and the children begin to learn the story as they are read to. We have also selected books that foster the children's interests and help them to gain knowledge of the world around them. Children are quick to have their favourite books and soon become confident early readers able to recite stories word for word. Children are able to borrow core texts to take home to share.
Our phonics teaching is sequenced through the use of ‘Letters and sounds’
We plan and introduce the children to aspects of phase 1 during whole and small group sessions, as well as incidentally as opportunities arise during child initiated learning both inside and out. During these phase one activities children’s speaking, listening and attention skills are developed through particular areas of focus; environmental and instrumental sounds, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration and blending and segmenting.
