We are excited to introduce to you Dougie, our school well-being dog, who joined us in 2023. Dougie is a Cockapoo and was specifically chosen as his breed are known to be very intelligent and friendly. They are also hypoallergenic so he should not trigger allergies.

Dougie lives with Mrs. Penwill and her family and comes into school two or three times per week. Whilst in school he is supervised at all times and remains on a lead with a staff member when around the children. Dougie’s designated space at school is within the office area and fenced front garden. When in school Dougie likes to be on hand to welcome the children and families as they arrive.

Dougie has acheived his ‘Good Citizen Bronze Award’ as well as his puppy foundation. A full risk assessment and dog policy are in place, which is followed by all staff. Dougie is the only dog insured to be on our premises.

Why dogs are beneficial to children:

  • Dogs offer unconditional love
  • Dogs teach children empathy
  • Caring for a dog increases a child’s self-confidence and independence
  • Communicating with a dog improves social and verbal skills
  • Dogs help us relax, lower our blood pressure and keep us active
